We are seeking an enthusiastic and flexible Consultant Haematologist to work 10 PA's per week. This role is primarily based at the site location of Musgrove Park Hospital within the Somerset NHS Foundation Trust. All our Consultants contribute to a County wide service that includes visiting sessions and on call commitments at Yeovil District Hospital.
You will share clinical and laboratory duties with seven other consultant colleagues and will join our amazing team of seven Haematology Specialist Nurses, two SAS doctors, two Specialist Registrars, one IMT doctor and one Clinical Fellow. You will be core members of the pan-Somerset Haematology multidisciplinary team.
We are a big Haematology department within a District General Hospital (DGH) setting. We are proud to offer Level 3 standard of care as defined by the British Committee Standardisation in Haematology (BCSH 2010).
We welcome applicants with a general or myeloid sub-specialty interest but we offer flexibility within our existing team to welcome applicants who already hold another sub-specialty interest or wish to develop a sub-specialty interests with this role. Although this is advertised full time post, we would be happy to discuss the option ofworking less than full time on an individual basis. Both of these elements can be discussed with our Clinical Service Lead, Dr Lisa Lowry.

To provide, to a high standard, the full range of specialist diagnosis, treatment and care to all patients requiring Haematology Services, in Somerset NHS Foundation Trust, together with the other consultants. This includes inpatients and outpatients.
To develop sub-speciality interest to guide high-quality, innovative patient care, and to provide leadership.
To contribute mainly to one or two sub-speciality "teams" -- myeloid, myeloma, lymphoma, and general/haemostasis.
To participate in Multidisciplinary Team meetings known as pan Somerset MDT.
To participate in teaching and grand rounds for medical students, junior medical staff and other clinical staff members.
To supervise the education of doctors in training and help with their personal and professional development.
The consultants operate an "attending" system, whereby the inpatient care, emergency referrals, triage of GP referrals and on-call are conducted together on a 1 in 8 rota. During this busy week, the consultant is not expected to have out-patient clinics.
Blood film and bone marrow reporting is a part of all the consultant roles. An Advice and Guidance platform is available for non-emergency GP queries, and all consultants contribute to the running of this service.
To take on departmental leadership roles by agreement, in rotation with other Consultant colleagues, including Clinical Service Lead, Laboratory Lead, Blood Transfusion Lead, JACIE Programme Director, MDT Lead, Education Lead, M&M Lead and Audit lead.

Our Haematology team have a stable workforce. The role attracts 10 PA's per week with the job plan offering 8.5 DCC and 1.5 SPA.
The current consultant team are working a 1 in 7 on call rota and this is due to move to a 1 in 8 on call rota commitment upon hiring to this vacant post. The frequency of on calls falls under category B, whilst busy during the day it tends to be quiet overnight and at weekends.
Our Department provides Haematology inpatient and outpatient services, as well as having Radiotherapy facilities within the Beacon Centre. The Beacon Centre (Taunton) provides cancer and Haematology care to the population of Somerset of approximately 560,000.
Chemotherapy is given in an outpatient setting at St Margaret's Hospice in Yeovil and The Beacon Centre in Taunton. Additional chemotherapy, transfusion and venesection services are provided at satellite units, including Wellington, Bridgwater, Williton and Shepton Mallet.
Teaching and Library facilities are based in the Somerset Academy. Haematology Consultant staff participate in teaching rotas for medical students and junior staff as well as the weekly hospital Grand Round teaching. Medical students from both Bristol and Plymouth Universities receive clinical teaching in Taunton.
Haematology laboratory services are provided by Southwest Pathology Services via a hub and spoke arrangement with the main laboratory off site in the centre of Taunton and smaller essential service laboratories (ESL) at Musgrove Park Hospital and Yeovil District Hospital.
All 3 laboratories are UKAS accredited. All the standard tests in Haematology, Coagulation, Biochemistry and transfusion are provided with ESLs providing a 24/7 service to both acute hospitals.
Research is encouraged, particularly when this is appropriate to the professional development of the successful candidate and to the service development of the department.
You will be expected to participate in clinical governance activities to assist the Trust to provide high quality services.
You will be responsible for undertaking the administrative duties associated with the care of patients and the administration of the department. They will be required to undertake training on the various IT systems related to the role.
You have the responsibility for the timely and accurate creation, maintenance and storage of records in accordance with Trust policy, including email documents and with regard to the Data Protection Act, The Freedom of Information Act and any other relevant statutory requirements.
You will be expected to complete mandatory Trust training.
