Job summary
Due to the continued expansion of the hospital, The New Foscote Hospital has a new, exciting opportunity for a highly skilled and experienced senior nurse to join our nursing team as Junior Sister.
As the Junior Ward Sister you will be responsible for supporting the leadership and overall management of the ward, providing the highest standards of care and services. This includes the assessment and evaluations of care in keeping with the NMC Code of Professional Conduct and the Scope of Professional Practice as well as the Hospitals Policies and Protocols.
This is a hands-on role where you will be role-modelling clinical excellence daily, whilst also supervising clinical care and overseeing quality and safety standards.
You will be at the centre of patient care. The strength of clinical leadership has an impact on the care patients receive and the experience of staff. An effective ward leader is a clinical expert, a leader and manager of the team and an educator of many.

Main duties of the job
What you will be doing:
- Be involved in the daily handovers to communicate all aspects of care and needs
- To demonstrate excellent communication skills within all nursing care
- To assess and plan nursing daily care
- Provide pre and post-operative care
- Monitor and administer medication and intravenous infusions
- Take patient samples, pulses, temperatures and blood pressures
- To supervise and mentor staff nurses, healthcare assistants (HCAs) and student nurses
- Organise and prioritise workloads
- Provide emotional support to patients and relatives
- To efficiently and accurately complete all written documentation and record keeping
- Be a role model to other staff on all departmental and hospital-wide matters
- Ensure the working environment is as safe as possible and complies with company, professional, legal requirements and guidelines
- Adhere to Infection Prevention Control policies and procedures
- To work closely with the Procurement Department
- To assist and support the Matron with any additional departmental work
- To undertake audits and spot-checks, utilising results to maintain / uplift the standards within the hospital
- Liaising with senior members of staff on hospital-wide matters
- Covering Matrons duties when required

Who we are looking for:
- Degree in adult general nursing
- Valid NMC registration
- Trained in Phlebotomy & Cannulation
- Trained in wound assessment
- Trained in administering medications
- IV trained
- Trained in basic observations / ECGs
- Trained in catheterisation
- ILS
- Safeguarding (Adults) Level 3
- An understanding of perioperative patient care
- Knowledge of the deteriorating patient
- Practical knowledge of safeguarding within a healthcare setting
- At least 3 years of post-qualification experience within an appropriate healthcare setting
- Surgical ward experience / acute care setting
- Experienced in complaint handling
- Experience of recruitment, appraisals and disciplinary procedures
